When Bill Clinton Reasons with Pro-Lifers

By Hannah Grace | March 10, 2008

Last month, while campaigning for his wife Hillary, Bill Clinton made a stop in Steubenville, Ohio. About fifteen minutes into his talk, more than one hundred pro-life students from the nearby Franciscan University of Steubenville held up pro-life signs and pressed him on the issue of abortion.According to eye witnesses, Bill Clinton lost his temper and responded with a long policy-type answer about Hillary’s views on abortion. He said that the pro-life position meant jailing women who have abortions.

Speaking of his wife, he said that even though she believes that every abortion is a tragedy, she did not believe that Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Bill said that she thinks that abortions should be more rare, but safe and legal.

“But when Hillary was in the White house,” he continued, “she supervised our efforts to, number one, let young women, who have children out of wedlock, live with their parents and still keep all their welfare benefits, so that the grandparents can take care of the kids while, the women went to school.”

Bill Clinton claimed that his wife led a serious effort to reduce teen pregnancy, and since the statistics have been kept, we have had the lowest teen pregnancy rate.

As Clinton went on, one man shouted out, “What about the four thousand plus children that are scheduled for abortion tomorrow? They are people too and we want answers.”

According to the press coverage, this question was enough to make the former President “erupt.” “He was so angry, we, in the press, couldn’t keep up with what he was saying. Clinton made it clear that, as a man, he disagreed [with the pro-lifers] on this issue,” said Sarah Amos, a reporter for ABC News.

“I reduced abortion,” Bill Clinton said. “If you were really pro-life, you would want to put every doctor and ever mother, as an accessory to murder, in prison. And you won’t say you wanna’ do that, because you know that you wouldn’t have a lick of political support. Now, you can’t name me anybody presently in politics that did more to introduce policies that reduce the number of real abortions, instead of the hot air putting out to tear people up and make votes by dividing America.”

Mary E. Traeger, media coordinator for Concerned Women for America of Missouri said that it was laughable to see and read that “our first abortion-supporting president, Bill Clinton, claimed that both his policies and Hillary’s opposed abortion.”

Mary Traeger points out that both Clintons have fought tirelessly against any limitations being placed on abortion. The Clintons support the use of federal tax dollars for abortions, and Bill Clinton twice vetoed bills to ban partial-birth abortion. He also made it possible for the lethal abortion drug RU 486 to be sold nationally.

If every abortion is a tragedy, as the Clintons say, why have they worked so hard to remove all restrictions from them being performed?
