From Abortionist to Pro-Life Activist

By Theresa Moss | December 3, 2008

Stojan Adasevic was one of Serbia’s most renowned abortion doctors, but after a series of nightmares, he became a strong pro-life activist.

In his 26 years in practice as an abortion doctor in Serbia, Adasevic had performed over 48,000 abortions (sometimes up to 35 per day). As the Communist medical textbooks taught, he believed that abortion was simply the removal of a blob of tissue. The use of ultrasounds in the 1980s did not change his opinion.

Nevertheless, Adasevic began to have nightmares.

Adasevic said he dreamed about a beautiful field full of children and young people who were playing and laughing but who ran away from him in fear. There was a man there who was dressed in black and white habit and who stared at him in silence.

Adasevic said the dream was repeated each night and each night he would wake up in a cold sweat. One night he asked the man in black and white who he was.

“My name is Thomas Aquinas,” the man in his dream responded. And, “[these children] are the ones you killed with your abortions.”

Adasevic said he awoke in amazement and decided not to perform any more abortions. That same day, though, a cousin came to the hospital with his four months-pregnant girlfriend who wanted to get her ninth abortion. Adasevic agreed, but during the procedure, the baby’s heart was delivered still beating.

Adasevic said he then realized that he had killed a human being. He became the first doctor in Communist Yugoslavia to refuse to perform abortions and as a result, the hospital cut Adasevic’s salary in half, fired his daughter from her job, and did not allow his son to enter the university.

Adasevic, however, kept his word and became very involved in the pro-life movement. He was even able to get Yugoslav television to twice air the pro-life film “The Silent Scream” by Doctor Bernard Nathanson. Adasevic is now the most important pro-life leader in Serbia.
